Ganit Week – 12 th to 16 th December

Mathematics Week was celebrated from 12 th to 16 th December in Vikhe Patil Memorial School to celebrate the Birth anniversary of India’s famed mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was born on 22 nd December 1887.
Maths Week gave us an opportunity to discover the intriguing and exciting world of numbers and to explore the beauty of Mathematics.
The board at the entrance displayed the magic square of Ramanujan and encouraged all to identify their magic number.
Food integration in Math prepared by students of Std 9 explored the facts that the sandwich which is enjoyed as a yummy snack or a satisfying meal- is actually a triangle. A triangle helps us learn about angles. These exhibits also gave an insight of food in 2D & 3 D shapes.
The celebrations began with a special assembly with students sharing Math based thought for the day and Story of Hardy Ramanujan number. This was followed by a Kathak and Bharatnatyam dance by the students of Std 6 which demonstrated angles formed in dance movements. Stasha from Std 8 recited a poem about mathematics and Std 9 students enthralled the audience by a Graph dance song.
The colours of mathematics was brought out by the display on the soft boards and house boards. LearnQuest conducted age appropriate activities indoors and outdoors for classes 4 to 8. Students participated enthusiastically and were overjoyed by the models made and puzzles solved. Std 8 conducted a math quiz for Std 6 students. It was an inter house competition and sapphire house emerged as winners.

How to avoid making silly mistakes in Mathematics was the topic of the session conducted by Mr. Nitin Kulkarni, founder of Flashcardz, alumni of IIT Delhi and coach for emotional intelligence. It was a great session. The tricks told by him are not only useful for mathematics but also for all the other subjects.
The Ganit week proved that the beauty of Maths is that all the concepts are connected to each other and connected to real life. For example-We all use maths to calculate our marks, percentage, weightage, grade and rank! The knowledge we gain about angles in primary school helps us with trigonometry which we do in class 10. And trigonometry is an indispensable tool for architects, astronomers, navigators, surveyors and many others. The understanding of fractions, decimals and percents would help in understanding the rhythms and patterns of music.
It was a fulfilling and engaging week for the entire team of Mathematics teachers of Std 4 to 10 with Principal Mrinalini Ma’am’s encouragement in each and every stage. The enthusiastic students have already planned in advance to celebrate Ganit week in the next academic session.
