“If you can believe it, the mind can achieve it!”
This was the thought for the day for Tuesday, 29 th August 2023 to celebrate National Sports Day. It was celebrated with a special assembly, held on the Basket Ball Court at VPMS, Pune. This day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of the Indian Hockey Legend; Major Dhyan Chand. The assembly was conducted by the students of IV B. It was graced with the presence of Sir Jinesh Nanal, an alumni
of our school and a Gold Medalist in International Slalom Skating.
The Significance of the Day was read out after the Thought. Then some lesser known facts on the life of Major Dhyan Chand were presented in the form of an interview. The audience were surprised to know how he practiced in the moonlight to be fondly called Dhyan ‘Chand’ with reference to the moon and how he turned down the offer he got from Adolf Hitler; the German Dictator, to join the German Military, to safeguard the honour of his country. The interview ended with Dhyan Chand giving the students a valuable life lesson on knowing their strengths, honing their skills and always believing that each one has magic within.
Further, the VPMS News Headlines were read out since a team of 47 students were representing our school in the Intra Unit Sports Trophy held at VPMS, Loni. The students were set to participate in Football, Handball, Tug of War, Athletics, Mix Relay and Yoga and would also be displaying a drill of Rhythmic Yoga.
Sir Jinesh Nanal was then felicitated and was asked to address the students. His speech about his career in sports, starting from the age of four, was very inspiring for the students.
The assembly ended with the National Anthem being sung with pride.
