Cement free homes which stays cool even when it’s 38 degrees outside!!!! Is this Real?? A video which explains the journey of a Pune based architect couple Druvang Hingmire and Priyanka Gunjikar was shown in the first half of the club activity. The video explained how local materials can be used with ancient architecture techniques to build homes with clay and lime. These homes stay cool naturally and doesn’t need AC’s and fans. These homes merge with the landscape around it.
A second video was shown which showcased How the pattern of beehive inspired the design for and affordable natural air cooler. Cylindrical terracotta cones, arranged in a beehive pattern, over which water is allowed to flow works as an elegant and energy efficient cooling system. A start up company Ant Studio by Monish Siripurapu, collaborates technology with traditional methods to invent methods to reduce energy in cooling spaces. Could this technology potentially replace electric refrigerant-based AC units?
The third video showcased the near extinct great Indian Bustard. Reasons for being extinct and their natural habitats were showcased in the video. After the break students visited Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha.
Students saw the Bio gas plant and Gray water recycle plant. Mr. Dinesh Shahapurkar explained the working and the amount of energy and money saved by adopting eco friendly measures to recycle waste materials and water.
The highlight of the trip was the visit to Maharshi Karve Kutir which was constructed in 1900. The life of hardships faced by Maharshi Karve was very well narrated by Mr Shahapurkar. It was interesting to understand how this initiative currently provides education and livelihood to 32,000 girls. Educating girls paved way to an eco friendly campus and philantrophy. Members enjoyed the delicacies offered in the bakery run by the samstha.
These club activities exposed students to make a reality check before wasting food and energy. They enthusiastically participated in the discussions post watching the videos and have realised the techniques of food waste recycling and waste water treatment from their visit to Karve Samstha.
