Puberty is the time when the adolescent body undergoes a process of physical changes, through which a child body matures into a young adult. Awareness of their bodily changes, not only helps them embrace the changes and cope with them, but also helps them develop a positive attitude towards these changes and respect their own bodies and all around them.
The session was conducted separately for girls and boys of 7 th and 8 th grade. The session began with an ice breaker activity so as to make students comfortable about naming their body parts. It followed by an explanation of the physical anatomy of the growth and development of the secondary sexual characteristics, their positions in the body along with their functions using a cross sectional picture. The boys were oriented about the male reproductive organs in detail along with a brief of female reproductive parts and the menstruation cycle. Following this was a query session where boys asked many queries and each one of them were addressed by the speaker.
For the girls, menstruation cycle was explained in detail along with the variety of period products available in the market. The female reproductive organs and functions of each organ were illustrated with the help of a picture. Using different analogies, the speaker helped the students realize how wonderful nature is, and emphasized the importance of appreciating one’s own body. A lot of myths related to menstruation, menstrual hygiene and female bodies were cleared. The session concluded with the query session where girls were extremely comfortable and asked a lot of queries which were all addressed very patiently by the speaker.
The importance of consent, respecting boundaries, maintaining personal hygiene, trust, love and intimacy being the very basis of any relationship were some other important points that were discussed. Overall, the session was very helpful and a much needed one, which helped students get a lot of clarity on the topic as mentioned by the students themselves.
