Report on Mass Media Club Day 31 st Aug 2024: Importance of Light in Photography

On 31 August, Mass Media club students witnessed an enthralling session in the computer lab, which had been transformed into a photography studio. The expert was Ms. Manasi Raut, a renowned photographer and VPMS alumnus with over 12 years of experience.
Lighting is one of the most crucial elements in photography. It can dramatically affect an images mood, quality, and overall impact.

A hands-on practical session was conducted, during which students clicked each other’s pictures using different lighting techniques. They clicked each other’s photos using Broad, short, and butterfly light to create drama and mystery in the pictures. They learned about the
crucial role that lighting plays in taking great photos. Ms. Mansi said that Lighting is not just about making a subject visible; it’s about creating the mood and highlighting details. Students made short Podcast videos for each other. They understood how the effective use of
light can transform an ordinary photo or video into something extraordinary.

The members were taught numerous ways to look at photography as a skill in the interactive session. They also learned what goes behind making a good photograph, such as the thought process and vision, rather than the usual camera settings or techniques. Valuable tips on how to use different types of lighting in photography as a tool of self-expression, the importance of having a unique perspective, and how to be ready to unlearn were a few things that were told and discussed. Ms. Raut used her years of experience to help members realize there is
more to photography than just a photograph that looks good; it’s about portraying a story. The picture one clicks should have a past and a future, which should be visible to the person observing the photograph.

The session highlighted that lighting is one of the most important aspects of photography and podcasts. It makes the subject visible and adds depth, mood, and focus to the image. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many students expressed their
excitement about the new skills they had acquired and their eagerness to apply them. Teachers praised the event for its well-organized structure and the practical knowledge imparted. Ms. Manasi also commended the students for their enthusiasm and creativity.

The session was very interactive, and many questions were addressed. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by the Club Incharge, Ms Sushmita Cholkar. It was an extraordinary session that ignited a new understanding in the budding photographers.
