Theme of Session 5: Acting Techniques & Scene Work
Learning Objective:
To introduce students to foundational acting theories, including the Bhava-Rasa theory, and to help them apply these methods to develop emotional authenticity and character depth in performance. To comprehend the importance of making mistakes, acceptance of their mistakes, sacrifice and team work.
Session Highlights:
Session 5 introduced students to key acting theories and techniques. The session opened with an overview of ‘Bhava-Rasa theory’ and further aspects like Strength and Stamina, Space Awareness, Breath Control, Adaptability, Agility and Qualities of Voice. The facilitator guided students through emotional recall, objectives, and truthful reactions in performance.
In addition, the facilitator emphasized the importance of making mistakes and learning from them. How to improvise on the spot to cover up mistakes, without letting the audience know about it.
Practical application took center stage as students worked in pairs and small groups to rehearse emotionally layered scenes. They were encouraged to use their newly learned techniques to delve deeper into character, motivation and expression. The results were impressive; many students showcased a noticeable improvement in emotional depth and authenticity. Peer feedback was incorporated to foster a collaborative learning environment.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the session, students were able to apply key acting techniques to enhance their portrayal of complex emotions and character motivations. Their scene work reflected a deeper emotional connection, improved authenticity, and a better understanding of performance objectives. Peer feedback helped reinforce collaborative learning and critical reflection. They understood the importance of teamwork, sacrifice, and not blaming others for mistakes. Even if they do make mistakes, they must accept them graciously, without any ego issues and proceed to improve their performance from thereon.
