“The best way of learning about anything is by doing.” This simple thought evolved into a beautiful outcome during the club activity. The fifth hands-on activity of the club was related to carpentry. It was focused on basic woodworking skills.
The session began with showing the samples of teak wood, sheesham, pine wood and jackfruit wood. The resource person then informed the students about artificial wood like MDF, particle wood, block wood, ply wood and their usage. The factors affecting the cost of the wood was discussed in detail.
After this, the students were introduced to different types of saws, filing tools, hammers and clamping devices. They practiced measuring, cutting, nailing and filing wooden pieces.
Students participated in a hands-on session where they created their own personalised key chain using wooden pieces. Under the supervision, they practiced cutting the pieces with a handsaw, smoothing the edges with different types of files and making holes using a drill machine.
Students showed great enthusiasm and worked patiently throughout the activity. The activity helped them gain confidence in using basic tools safely and introduced them to simple engineering concepts through hands-on learning. The personalised key chain making activity was enjoyable and helped students develop confidence, fine motor skills, and a sense of achievement.
