“Behind every child who believes in themselves is a teacher who believed in them first”

To highlight the significant role of teachers and the profound influence they have on a child’s life, a professional development session on the above-mentioned topic was conducted. The session commenced with a clear explanation of the distinction between Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence, followed by a discussion on the various factors that contribute to the development of a child’s self-esteem.

Through the use of case studies and experiential activities, the resource person effectively illustrated the impact of teachers’ words, tone, and statements within the classroom environment. A focused discussion was held on the concept of the “Teacher Bully,” a term newly introduced to many participants. The session sensitively addressed certain teacher behaviours that, though often unintentional, may be perceived as bullying by students. These behaviours were explored through practical examples, encouraging teachers to reflect on their communication styles and classroom practices.

Participants were urged to exercise greater awareness and mindfulness in their interactions with students, recognizing the lasting effect their words and actions can have on a child’s emotional and psychological well-being.

The session concluded with a collaborative group activity wherein participants were assigned specific values and tasked with formulating practical and age-appropriate strategies to inculcate those values among students. The programme culminated in a reflective oath-taking activity, during which teachers committed to one positive change they intended to implement in their professional practice. These reflections were shared and displayed live through Mentimeter, making the closure of the session both impactful and introspective
