ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAY CELEBRATED WITH VERVE AND ENTHUSIASM AT VPMS PUNE -Bharati Kudchadker
English Language Day at Vikhe Patil Memorial School Pune was celebrated with great enthusiasm and creativity, showcasing the richness and diversity of the English language through various performances and activities. The event aimed to foster a love for the language and its cultural significance among students, while also providing a platform for them to showcase their talents.
The celebrations commenced with a special morning assembly on the 23rd of April at the school amphitheatre. The thought for the day, amazing facts about English and the significance of the day were shared with students and staff. To begin the programme, the tiny tots of Std III performed a lively dance choreographed to the beats of the ‘Rainbow Song’. Following that, a song was presented by students of Stds IV, and V titled ‘Try Everything’ from the film Zootopia. It was a soulful rendition of a popular English song, and it enthralled the audience, resonating with the theme of the day. The melodious performance showcased the power of music as a universal language that transcends barriers.
Aria Dhakade of Std VII then recited a self-composed poem titled ‘The Eloquence of English’. The poignant poem recitation added a literary dimension to the event, highlighting the beauty and versatility of the English language in expressing emotions, thoughts, and experiences. The recitation captivated the audience with its eloquence and depth of expression. Students of Stds VII and VIII then performed a mesmerizing dance set to the song ‘If You Believe, You Can Move the Highest Mountain.’
One of the highlights of the celebration was a skit parodying Shakespeare’s timeless classic, “Romeo and Juliet.” Titled “Balcony Banter,” the skit offered a humorous twist to the tragic love story, injecting modern-day humor and references while staying true to the essence of the original play. Through witty dialogues and comical situations, the skit entertained the audience while also showcasing the students’ creativity and flair for drama. To conclude, Ms. Bharati Kudchadker, Head of the English Department proposed the Vote of Thanks and the programme concluded with the National Anthem.
Myriad language activities were planned across all the sections of the school during the day such as the Middle School Quiz for students of Stds VI TO VIII wherein out of four teams comprising six students each, team Gladiolus won the final round. Thought-provoking fun games and interesting language activities were conducted for classes I to V. A ‘Rendezvous with an Author’ for students of Stds X and XII was organized. The acclaimed author Virendra Kapoor interacted with the students and shared valuable insights on varied topics like education, reading, buying books, cell phone fasting, values such as self-control, trust, maturity, punctuality, climate change, cleanliness, my nation first, the refugee crisis and willpower, among others, while providing key tips to them for their lives ahead. He also gave away ten signed copies of his books to students, after a lucky draw.
The English Language Day celebrations at VPMS Pune were a resounding success, showcasing the language’s richness, diversity, and cultural significance through scintillating performances and activities. The school and class boards were decorated beautifully in keeping with the theme. It served as a reminder of the importance of language in connecting people and cultures across the globe, reinforcing the school’s commitment to promoting linguistic and cultural diversity. The event concluded with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and appreciation for the English language, inspiring students to continue exploring its vast potential and contributing to its legacy in their own unique ways.
