Club report for Handicraft Club – 13 th July 2024.
Name of the activity-Denim sling bag making.
As goes the saying ‘A creative mess is better than tidy idleness’
In a bid to nurture the attitude of upcycling discarded things and transforming them to reusable articles, the club members learnt the technique of transforming used worn out jeans into pretty denim sling bags.
The students were asked to bring a pair of old worn-out jeans, a pair of scissors, sewing needles and thread of any colour along with laces, buttons, nut shells and sequins to decorate the bags made.
The session began with Ms. Nayana Dinkar, the resource person, demonstrating the making of a bag by explaining the cutting of the jeans in different shapes and sizes like rectangular, square and circular shape using a measuring tape to using different stitches like a regular stitch and a hemming stitch. The engrossed members soon learnt to use fine motor skills of threading the needle to holding the needle correctly while doing the needlework. The students used their creativity to stitch simple denim bags of varying sizes using simple sew patterns transforming the Art room to a small stitching unit.
The days’ laborious work was worthwhile for the students when their faces beamed with happiness blended with a sense of achievement while showing their beautiful art work to everyone.
