Physiological Awareness is an essential aspect of a comprehensive health education program. In Grade 7, students are at an age where they are naturally curious about their bodies, relationships, and sexuality. Providing education and orientation at this stage can have numerous benefits and with a view to promote healthy relationships and prevent misinformation a Session on “Know Your Body”
was conducted for students of grade VII.

The session was conducted separately for boys and girls.

The session began with an interactive quiz wherein students had to point out all the changes that they would observe in boys’ and girls’ bodies at pubertal age and use the right terminology for every part. It followed by an explanation of the physical anatomy of the growth and development of the secondary sexual characteristics, their positions in the body along with their functions using a cross-sectional picture. Boys were made aware of all the important things that they need to be aware of while they’re growing up. The boys were oriented about the male reproductive organs in detail along with a brief of female reproductive parts and the menstruation cycle. This was followed by a query session.

For the girls, the physiology of Menstruation was explained in detail along with the variety of period products and inner garments available in the market. There was lot of emphasis laid on Menstrual hygiene and the necessity of having a period kit in every girl’s bag was highlighted. The female reproductive organs and functions of each organ were illustrated with the help of a cross-sectional figure. A lot of myths related to menstruation, menstrual hygiene and female bodies were clarified. The session concluded with queries from girls which were all addressed very patiently by the speaker.

The importance of consent, respecting boundaries, loving and accepting our own body, maintaining personal hygiene, labelling and its effect, love and intimacy being the very basis of any relationship were some other important points that were explained using relevant examples. Using different analogies, the speaker helped the students realize how wonderful nature is, and emphasized the importance of being grateful for one’s own body

By providing a comprehensive Sex Education, students were empowered with essential knowledge, skills and values to promote healthy relationships, responsible decision making and overall wellbeing.
