Space and Astronomy
Name of the Activity: Energy of a Star
Objectives:
1. To gain more knowledge about solar energy
2. To inculcate the spirit of teamwork by motivating students to work in groups
3. To promote active listening
4. To create sensitivity, understanding and awareness among students toward solar energy
Resource person: Mr Parag Gore (From Box of Science)
Activity Plan:
The activity was conducted on Saturday, 24th June 2023 in the Audio Visual Room and Seminar Hall of VPMS Pune. Students were first seated class-wise and later they were divided into small groups for the activity.
Report of the activity:
‘The solar system is completely wide open.
Almost anywhere we go, I am sure we would learn a lot.’ – Alan Stern
The first activity of the Space and Astronomy Club started with a presentation, related to the Sun as a source of energy, given by the resource person Mr. Parag Gore.
The following concepts were explained:
Theory of Star Formation
Balancing Nuclear Reactor
Structure of the Sun, its core and temperature
Radiative Zone
Photosphere
Radiations from the Sun
Applications of Solar Energy
After the presentation, a step-wise explanation on how to make the model of Solar Energy Conversion Power Panel was given to the students and the students showed great enthusiasm in making the models. The students worked in groups of 6 guided by their teachers. They constructed the solar panels and had a hands on experience on the working model. They learnt the application and functioning of solar panels in everyday life and how it can be harnessed. They tested their models under the heat created by a filament bulb provided by the resource person. Testing the fan attached to the motor, the buzzer and the LED bulb attached to the solar energy was an accomplishment for them. They were thrilled to see the final product. It was an enriching activity that was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.
