Activity: Introduction to Water Audit of School Premises

 Introduction

Water is one of the most precious natural resources, yet it is frequently wasted due to poor habits, aging infrastructure, and lack of awareness. The Water Audit Skill Education for Standard 8 aims to build practical life skills and environmental consciousness in students beyond the traditional classroom setting. As part of this initiative, a Water Audit Activity was organised within the school premises to give students hands-on experience in assessing water usage, identifying leakage points, and suggesting conservation measures.

The activity was conducted with the valuable guidance and support of Mr. Rakesh Borse, Assistant Engineer from the Municipal Water Department, who brought professional expertise and real-world perspective to the exercise.

Objectives of the Activity

  • To make students aware of water consumption patterns in their immediate environment.
  • How to identify areas of water wastage and leakage on the school campus.
  • To learn the concept of a water audit as used by professionals in the water management sector.
  • To encourage students to become responsible water stewards in their homes and communities.
  • To interact with a government official and understand the functioning of the water supply department.

 Description of the Activity

Orientation

The activity commenced with a brief welcome address by Ms Neelam Bhosale, followed by a presentation to highlight the importance of water conservation and the relevance of skill-based learning. Then, the resource person Mr. Borse shared valuable information about the sources of water, different types of dams in and around Pune, water treatment plants, STP plants and the water supply system through a detailed presentation.

He also shared statistics about water availability in the district and the challenge of meeting growing urban demand. A brief Q&A session followed, where students enthusiastically posed questions and Mr Borse answered each question clearly and encouraged students to consider careers in environmental engineering and water resource management.

Campus Walk

All the students were divided into two teams. These teams accompanied by their teachers and guided by Mr. Borse visited different zones like main water storage tank, drainage system and the water collection tank for reuse in the school campus. They also learned simple methods to measure the usage of water at home and reduce water wastage.

Learning Outcomes

The introduction to Water Audit Activity achieved its intended educational objectives effectively. The key learning outcomes observed were:

  • Students developed understanding of water auditing as a professional practice.
  • They practised skills of systematic observation, measurement, data recording, and teamwork.
  • The interaction with Mr. Rakesh Borse exposed students to a real government official and gave them insight into the functioning of the municipal water supply system.
  • This introductory session fostered a sense of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Conclusion

The introductory session of Water Audit was a meaningful and impactful learning experience. The professional guidance of Mr. Borse from the Municipal Water Department added immense credibility and depth to the session.

Overall, this introductory session was informative and engaging. It successfully helped students develop awareness, understanding about the available resources, and a sense of responsibility towards water conservation.
