‘The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.’

– Gertrude Jekyll

The second activity of the Plant Nursery was conducted with great enthusiasm. The activity was divided into two parts. In the first part a presentation related to plant nursery was given by the resource person Ms. Preetam Tulsibagwale, a co-founder of Biocycle Garden Solution. Ms. Preetam explained in detail what is a plant nursery and why it is important. She highlighted the role of nurseries in preserving indigenous plant varieties, developing new varieties, and producing plants on a large scale. The basic requirements for setting up a nursery, such as adequate open space, water, sunlight, ventilation, sloping land, seeds, saplings, and gardening tools, were also discussed.

The resource person shared the inspiring work of Rahibai Soma Popere, popularly known as the “Seed Mother of India,” who is renowned for her efforts in conserving indigenous seeds and promoting traditional, sustainable farming practices. Students were encouraged to create their own seed banks, collect and preserve seeds, and plant them in nearby areas to help make their surroundings greener.

In addition, students learned about different types of seeds, including monocot, dicot, and orthodox seeds. Various methods of plant propagation, such as propagation through seeds, stem cuttings, and bulbs, were also explained.

In the second part of the activity, students gained practical exposure to nursery management. They were introduced to various gardening tools, different types of soil, and organic manure. The students were divided into groups, and each group participated in hands-on activities such as filling seedling trays, nursery bags, and pots. They prepared soil mixtures and planted seeds, stem cuttings, and bulbs of medicinal and flowering plants.

The Plant Nursery activity was a meaningful and enriching learning experience for the students. Through both the theoretical session and hands-on activities, students gained valuable knowledge about plant nurseries, seed conservation, and various methods of plant propagation. Overall, the session fostered a sense of responsibility, environmental awareness, and appreciation for sustainable practices among the students.
