BRIDGING THE GAP: REPORT ON “CAREER GUIDANCE & MASTERING  MATHEMATICS”

On Wednesday, 5th August, a comprehensive career guidance and academic workshop titled “Career Guidance & Mastering Mathematics: Avoiding Silly Mistakes” was conducted in the AV Room for students of Grades 9 and 10 across two dedicated sessions—Session 1 for Grade 10 at 8:15 AM, followed by Session 2 for Grade 9 at 9:45 AM. Designed to help students bridge “the gap between what you know and what you score,” the event aimed to transform learners into strategic thinkers through self-awareness and improved academic habits. To ensure the presentation directly addressed the specific learning hurdles of the attendees, a preliminary survey via Google Forms was distributed in advance, allowing the content to be tailored precisely to student needs.

The session was facilitated by Mr. Aman Kaushik, Co-Founder of Horizon Learning Studio. Holding an M.Sc. in Mathematics and a B.Ed., Mr. Kaushik brings over 12 years of experience teaching ICSE, IGCSE, and Cambridge curricula. Widely recognized for transforming complex concepts into engaging learning experiences, he specializes in career guidance, STEM pathways, and systematic error elimination techniques to equip students with analytical thinking and disciplined problem-solving skills.

Mr. Kaushik initiated the interaction with an engaging exercise, asking students about their smartphones, device specifications, and favourite football players. He drew a striking analogy: while everyone learns how to operate complex gadgets, students rarely read the “user manual” of their own mind, the most powerful device they possess. He explained that peak performance in mathematics requires understanding how the brain functions, specifically regarding working memory, attention span, and learning algorithms. By training the subconscious mind and being mindful of what they feed it daily, students can reduce “attention residue” and rely far less on luck during examinations.

To combat frequent examination errors, Mr. Kaushik shared practical academic strategies covering environmental discipline, such as decluttering study spaces, and test-taking discipline, cautioning against reading questions hurriedly or partially. Rather than jumping directly into calculations, students were encouraged to read problems thoroughly and visualize them. To permanently rewire mathematical performance, he introduced two daily habits: the 30-Minute Focus Sprint (focusing on form and accuracy before attempting speed) and maintaining an Error Audit Log. He also urged students to view homework as a diagnostic tool to catch and correct mistakes well before exam day, rather than an exercise completed merely for submission.

The session concluded with an interactive Question and Answer segment where students raised insightful queries regarding daily life applications of mathematics and whether visualising problems consumes excessive exam time. Mr. Kaushik reassured students that initial visualization saves time in the long run by preventing rework and misunderstandings. The workshop was immensely practical and impactful, providing students with actionable techniques, improved reflection habits, and structured clarity.

We extend our sincere thanks to our respected Principal, Ms. Mrinalini Fernandes, for arranging this enriching and practical session. Her continuous efforts to organize targeted learning initiatives provide our students with the guidance, mindset, and practical tools needed to achieve both academic excellence and future clarity.
