Introduction to Drama – The World of Theatre and Storytelling

Session Highlights:
The inaugural session of the Dramatic Dreamers Club commenced with an enthusiastic welcome
and an engaging warm-up activity to ignite students’ curiosity. This was followed by a
presentation and interactive discussion on the essence of drama.

Key topics covered included:
 The Purpose of Drama:
Understanding how drama mirrors human emotions, conveys stories, and serves as a reflection of society.
 Significance of Theatre in Storytelling:
Exploring how plays, performances, and enactments help to bring characters and narratives to life.
 Types of Communication in Drama:
Verbal (dialogue, monologue), non-verbal (gestures, facial expressions, body language), and visual (stagecraft, costumes, lighting).
 Brief History of Drama:
A journey from ancient Greek theatre and Roman amphitheatres to medieval morality plays, Shakespearean drama, and contemporary theatre forms. Students were encouraged to share their prior experiences with stage performances, storytelling, or drama and participated in small group discussions on what theatre means to them.

Learning Outcome:
By the end of the session, students were able to:
 Articulate the purpose and importance of drama and theatre in society.
 Identify different forms of communication used in theatrical performances.

 Demonstrate an introductory understanding of the historical development of drama and its key stages.
 Express their own perspectives on drama through group interactions and reflective discussions.
 Show heightened interest and curiosity in exploring the dramatic arts.

The first session successfully laid the foundation for the weeks ahead, sparking creativity and enthusiasm in all participants. The energy and interest displayed by the students promise an exciting and enriching journey through the world of drama.
