REPORT OF THE FINAL INTER-HOUSE DEBATE
The third and final Inter-House Debate was held on November 22, 2024, in the Seminar Hall between 9.50 a.m. and 11.10 a.m. The topic for the debate, “Private Coaching Institutes are a Boon for Students”, witnessed heated arguments from both sides. Emerald House, speaking in favor of the motion, presented a compelling case for the benefits of private coaching institutes. The team argued that these institutes provide focused attention, specialized study materials, and rigorous preparation tailored to competitive exams. They emphasized how such facilities can bridge gaps in school education and equip students with skills to excel in highly competitive environments. Citing examples of successful alumni from coaching institutes, the speakers passionately argued that private coaching often serves as a catalyst for academic success.
On the other hand, Ruby House, opposing the motion, delivered a powerful rebuttal. They highlighted the undue pressure and stress that private coaching imposes on students, often leading to burnout and mental health issues. The team argued that these institutes perpetuate
inequality, as they are expensive and inaccessible to many. They further contended that reliance on private coaching undermines the value of holistic education provided by schools, which includes overall personality development rather than a narrow focus on exam preparation.
The debate saw engaging arguments and counterarguments as both houses presented statistics, real-life anecdotes, and thought-provoking questions. The judges for the event were Ms. Candace Braganza, the Principal of VPMS Lohegaon and Ms. Prachi Kulkarni, a Math teacher of the Upper Primary section. They commended the participants for their eloquence, research, and critical thinking.
After a fruitful and effective exchange of ideas, the judges deliberated on the performances. Ruby House emerged victorious, with their well-structured arguments and ability to address counterpoints convincingly. However, Emerald House was lauded for their enthusiasm and
effective use of data to support their case. Anvit Likhate from the Emerald House and Shreya Mohan from the Ruby House were declared the Best Speakers by the judges. Each house team comprised six members. Three members delivered the preliminary speeches and the remaining three participated in the rebuttal round. Students of classes X, XI and XII participated in and were the audience for the debate. Both houses were well prepared and had done a lot of research to put forth their views with conviction and passion.
