Project 2 – Tie and Dye

Topic: Tie and Dye

 

“Art is the journey of turning simple cloth into something extraordinary.”

Objectives:

  • To learn how patterns are created by tying and dyeing fabric.
  • To design their own unique patterns using different tying techniques and colour combinations.
  • To improve hand coordination through folding, tying, and dyeing the fabric.
  • To observe how colours blend and create new shades during the dyeing process.

Materials required: Food colours, water, brushes, white handkerchief, thread.

Introduction:

The Tie and Dye activity was conducted on 11th April 2026 in school to encourage creativity and provide students with hands-on experience in traditional art forms. Tie and dye is a simple fabric decoration technique in which cloth is tied in different patterns and then dyed to create unique and colourful designs. This activity helped students explore their artistic skills, understand colour combinations, and appreciate the beauty of handmade crafts. It was an engaging and enjoyable learning experience for all participants.

Procedure:
Students were first given a brief explanation along with the videos and demonstration of the tie and dye technique. They were even shown some sample apparels of Bandhani and Shibori  They then folded and tied the cloth using thread in different patterns. After that, they dipped their tied into the colours. The cloth was untied to reveal beautiful and unique patterns. The dyed cloth was left to dry for some time.

Conclusion:
The Tie and Dye activity was a fun-filled and enriching experience for the students. It not only enhanced their creativity but also helped them learn a new skill. Students enjoyed the process and were excited to see the final results of their work. The first task began by the students giving the first coat of Gesso white paint as the base paint on the sides of the kettle after which a base colour coat of warm colours like yellow, shades of blue were applied.
